Hiroshima

Eventually this blog will catch up to the present -- our summer travelling is pretty much over now -- but for now we're still mining the past.

Back at the end of June we went to Hiroshima for the weekend. It takes about 4 hours on the shinkansen to get there. We didn't visit any of the usual sights, but just wandered around the city. We took a day trip to a nearby island, which I will do another post about. This post is just about the city. It's a nice city.

Our hotel used to have a swimming pool, which they have turned into a bar. I think Ingrid would have preferred the pool, but it was still a pretty nice bar.

Sadly we did not have time to visit this "authentic" Irish pub. It was very tempting, just for the absurdity.

This is Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. It's a kind of a pancake made of noodles, with various other additions, cooked on a hotplate. Very tasty. Turns out two of them is the right amount for four people, but we struggled through it.

There is also the Osaka-style, which is clearly inferior.

This dish is called "crab party". I think you can see why.

This is the aftermath of the party.

Hiroshima castle was destroyed by the atomic bomb in 1945. But they rebuild some of it. There used to be barracks, which are now a garden.

Ingrid practiced her war face with a very heavy samurai helmet in the museum. Pretty scary.
